Sports Video Tips

If you are interested in shooting some sports video footage of a favorite local team, or your favorite player in the family, then you might want to take a minute to learn some good tips that can help you improve the quality of your shots.

Some folks endeavor to make a sports video in order to contribute to a future video recruitment effort, perhaps at the college level, while others are mainly interested in keeping it as a memento of the sporting experiences of their children, chronicling their progress and triumphs in their chosen sport.

Still, for others, the main purpose of producing sports video footage is to use it for instructional purposes, to help a team see where improvements can be made, to record a kick boxing event or favorite boxing match and for a concerned parent to point out both the positive and negative elements of their kid’s participation during a game.

Whatever purpose your sports video ends up achieving, one thing is for sure, you will want to make the film in such a way that it is interesting and enjoyable for yourself and for others to watch.

There are some very simple and quite effective sports video recording tips that can help make your videos better. They can even help you to start shooting just like a professional videographer. These tips include:

Camcorder Basics: You will want to be sure that you take sufficient time to get to know both the basic functions and some of the advanced features of your camcorder before you need to shoot your first sports video. Get used to the different adjustments you can make and the effects you can use and for best results, it’s always a good idea to read through the manual to pick up on some of the little know tricks and some of the more unique aspects of your particular camcorder.

Exposure Control: One of the biggest problems that amateur sports video makers run into is getting the exposure right. Exposure is about lighting and how bright the subject of your video is when shot. If the exposure is not set correctly this will result in either overexposure, which means that everything is washed out or underexposure, which means the overall picture is too dark and it is hard to distinguish what is going on in the shot. The owner’s manual will usually give specific instructions for your model of camcorder. And, most cameras have auto-exposure settings, but strong back-lighting conditions can throw off an automatic setting, so it’s good to be familiar with the controls.

White Balance Adjustment: The white balance of an image refers to the balance between the whites and the darker colors in the shoot. If this is incorrectly set then the white portions of the video will be too bright and may have a tint of another color. Therefore, the overall picture will appear to be of a very low quality because of this improper balance. Again, consult the manual for the specific adjustments you can make for good white balance.

Tripods: You should use a tripod whenever you can to avoid ending up with a sports video that is shaky and jerky, which can make it very unpleasant to watch.

Follow the Game: It is tempting to follow only your favorite athlete, especially if it’s your child in the middle of the action. However, for a good quality sports video, it is best to follow all the action, only zooming in on your child when the action is centering around him.

Practice makes perfect in sports and it will help you to make a good sports video as well. You shouldn’t expect to make a great video of the first sporting event that you cover, be it a kickboxing event or a little league baseball game. Over time your skills will improve.
